Shelagh Braley is the Editor of FoundersWire (www.founderswire.com). In her discussion with Venture Café Presents host Christine Dunn, Ms. Braley discusses FounderWire’s mission and how it fits into the current news journalism landscape.

FoundersWire is the only mobile-first business news organization in Boston. “We’re trying to capture that younger audience while looking at the gaps in coverage in Boston where the emerging companies are coming up,” said Ms. Braley. The FoudersWire journalists aim to focus on female and minority business founders and entrepreneurs, and want to find the stories that other news organizations are ignoring. “We are trying to tell a more complete story about the Boston [business] ecosystem.”

When deciding what stories and businesses to cover, FoundersWire looks at the important questions – is this something the world needs? Is it actually addressing the problem? Boston already has the depth of knowledge and infrastructure in world-class universities, teaching hospitals, and technology research. “We should be leveraging this as a selling point for why companies” should come to Boston. By focusing on the local angle of coverage and on the people behind the companies, rather than solely on the product or idea, “we capture them right at the heart of why they love what they do” and highlight the vibrant Boston community of entrepreneurs and small businesses.

When looking at the current media landscape, Braley sees the need for more varied and in depth news coverage. Resources in news journalism are tough to come by and the major outlets can’t possibly cover everything that happens. Companies that operate outside the tech sector or aren’t major corporations simply aren’t getting their stories published. FoundersWire is looking to provide an entry point for those companies who also have compelling stories and be a means to reach a reporter that might be interested in their story.
