PR executive Eri Mizrobe discusses the importance of reaching out to and maintaining a personal connection with journalists in her most recent article for PR Daily. While written in the context of doing a “media tour” and visiting multiple outlets and journalists in succession, Mizrobe’s comments apply in any context when sitting down with a journalist in person. She first stresses the important things to consider when preparing to meet the journalist in person. Do your research on who you’re going to meet – beat, background, interests, etc. Make sure you have enough points to discuss that will show your preparation and knowledge about the editor or journalist, as well as the publication they represent. Always be sure to schedule meetings at a convenient time, and follow up to confirm.

During the meeting, it’s vital to show your interest and be an engaged participant in the conversation (your research prep will help with that). Post-meeting, be sure to follow-up and thank them for their time. Continue to foster the relationship you’ve forged in person by connecting with them on social media, as well.

Following these few simple steps can go a long way in establishing a personal connection and mutually beneficial relationship with a valuable member of the media.

Our viewPoint

Enough can’t be said about the value for PR professionals in establishing a personal connection with journalists. Our business is based on getting the word out about our clients, and a trusted resource in the media is vital to making sure that message reaches the target audience, in a timely and professional manner. Given the prevalence of digital and social interactions these days, anything we can do, particularly on a personal level, will go a long way in fostering that all-important connection.
